WHAT CAUSES OVERACTIVE BLADDER?
Overactive bladder is caused by dysfunction of the bladder nerves or bladder muscle. This dysfunction leads to urinary frequency, urinary urgency (the sudden urge to urinate), and sometimes urge incontinence (loss of urine control). OAB can be aggravated with too much caffeine, soda, or alcohol intake as well as neurologic diseases.

INITIAL VISIT

MINOR TESTING
You are sedated through an IV in our surgery center. There is no pain, no incision, and no discomfort. Advanced Nervestim testing is performed by placing small wires the size of thread down to the bladder nerves. This is done via a small skin puncture similar to a blood draw. You are sent home after a short 10 minute procedure.

MINOR PROCEDURE
You are sedated through an IV in our surgery center. Advanced Nervestim is performed and a small battery and soft wire are implanted under the skin. The procedure typically takes 30 minutes and you are sent home the same day. You should expect improvement within the first week.
HOW DOES ADVANCED NERVESTIM WORK?
Advanced Nervestim changes how the bladder nerves work fixing the root of the issue. This is a Peripheral Tibial Nerve Evaluation or a PNE. It is a long term solution for OAB with incredible precision and accuracy.
HOW IS ADVANCED NERVESTIM DONE?
This is performed in two parts.
First, a painless test is performed under anesthesia in our procedure center to determine if there is a bladder nerve or muscle problem. This is called Peripheral Tibial Nerve Evaluation or a PNE. Small wires the size of a thread are placed through the low back through a skin puncture, similar to a small needle used for blood draws. There are no cuts or incisions. These wires wirelessly transmit information to a Samsung phone to record information.
If this minor test determines there is a bladder nerve problem, then a permanent nerve stimulator is implanted under the skin. This is also known as Interstim. This is done with sedation in our procedure center in approximately 30 minutes. The permanent device is hidden and completely underneath the skin. For patients who do not want anesthesia, this procedure can be done with local numbing medicine only.
