How long does the surgery take and how long am I in the hospital?
The surgery is a quick 30-45 minute outpatient surgery. You go home the same day and start your recovery period right away.
What are the risks of penile implant surgery?
The risks of surgery include infection, bleeding, and anesthesia. There is rare risk of chronic testicular pain or injury to the urethra (the tube you void out of), the testicles, or bowel. The risk of infection is 1% and we take extra precautions to keep this risk extremely low. Overall, patients generally have a very good experience after our surgeries.
What is the recovery time?
We have an expedited recovery time of 3-4 weeks, the fastest in the nation. This is because we use a very small single incision to place the entire implant. We also use local anesthesia to block the nerves so you have extended pain free recovery immediately after surgery.
How much penile length will I lose after surgery and what can I do to prevent this?
The surgery itself rarely results in length loss and often may result in length restoration. Generally, lost length occurs because of years of poor blood flow from poor erections resulting in penis muscle weakening (disuse atrophy). Use of a vacuum erection device (VED) 10 minutes a day for at least 2 weeks prior to surgery will reduce this disuse atrophy and allow your surgeon to maximize your penile length during penile implant placement. Additionally, your surgeon may be able to offer you advanced techniques to maximize and restore lost penile length.
Will I still be able to ejaculate or have an orgasm after penile implant surgery?
The penile implant does not affect your sensation, orgasm, or ejaculation ability. If you were able to ejaculate prior to the surgery, you will still be able to afterwards. The penile implant simply gives you full control of your erections, reinvigorating lost intimacy, and allowing you to have erections whenever you want for as long as you want.
Are there persons available who have gone through the surgery that I can talk to?
We have patient educators who have gone through all forms of ED treatments and ultimately the penile implant surgery and can tell you their personal experience with it. Talk to your Urologist and he can provide you with their contact information.
